Gothic Peak

Gothic Peak

Welcome to the TryThought Blog, an exploration of my interests in science, philosophy, literature, and life.  I tend to wander through a diverse range of topics, but you will probably notice the regular patterns that emerge as I come back to those areas that inspire the most passion for me.

This picture was taken by my brother, Jay, a few years back as I looked out over the Cascade Mountains from Gothic Peak.  As you will find, Jay and I find some great spots that are just stunning in their beauty. In a phenomenon that seems to have an analogy in more conceptual terrain, I’ve found that the most incredible ways of seeing the universe are from those vistas that take an incredible amount of effort to attain.  There are moments like this one that stay with me always – powerful sensations of awe and wonder that make one relish being alive.

I am not a religious person, and I find places like these to be much better points of reverence than churches with their hollow rituals.  But one need not climb to the tops of mountains to discover this wonderful state – intellectual terrain with its challenging paths and complex landscape can demand just as much effort to reach just points of realization and understanding that are just as rewarding as that which awaits climbers of mountains.  Within the entries of this blog, I hope to celebrate all forms of this awe and splendor that makes life an experience worthy of our attention.
